Prof. Schmidt wurde 1969 in Coburg geboren und nahm 1989 ein Studium der Elektrotechnik mit Fachrichtung Mikroelektronik und Informatik an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg auf. Ab 1997 war er als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Bereich der Laserstrahl-Mikrotechnik des Lehrstuhls für Fertigungstechnologie an der Universität Erlangen tätig, bevor er 2001 als Bereichsleiter Entwicklung/Fertigung an das Bayerische Laserzentrum wechselte. Im Jahr 2002 schloss Prof. Schmidt seine Promotion zum Thema „Prozessregelung für das Laserstrahl-Punktschweißen in der Elektronikproduktion” ab und wurde danach als Prokurist Mitglied der Geschäftsleitung des Bayerischen Laserzentrums. Seit Januar 2005 ist Prof. Schmidt Geschäftsführer des Bayerischen Laserzentrums und seit März 2009 Ordinarius des neu gegründeten Lehrstuhls für Photonische Technologien.
